Doggie & Kitty Odor

Any unknown
or unpleasant pet odors
should be examined
both for your nose
& your pet's health!

Have you ever wondered why your dog has a particular odor about him/her?

The first step to addressing the odor is to determine where it is coming from
and whether it is a "Natural" odor or not.

Natural Dog Odors
  • Skin glands-produce pheromones for signaling to other animals. There are also sweat glands on the pads of the paws which when moist can give off an unpleasant odor.
  • Anal glands-give off a very strong musty odor. May be expressed when scared.
  • Naturally produced secretions of skin-most prominent at anus, ears & footpads.
  • Rolling behavior-dogs like to roll and mark themselves with other animal scents in their environment.
 Un-Natural Sources of Odor
  • Skin diseases / infections- can produce a local reaction with a smell in one area  or as a generalized condition.
  • Ear disease-a common source of odor
  • Anal Sac infections-can cause a very musty pungent odor.
  • Dental disease-causes severe bad breath
  • Medications/Food  can leave an odor behind, eg. a fish product may give a fishy smelling pet.
  • Flatulence/gas - may be diet related  esp to cereal based foods.
