Never leave your pet in the car
  • A vehicle can become a death trap even on a mild sunny day. Your car's temperature can quickly rise to well above 120°!!!
  • NEVER, EVER leave your pet inside a car even with the window cracked open!
 Provide shade & water
  • Another potential heatstroke situation is leaving your pet outdoors without sufficient shade or air circulation.
  • Outdoor kennels should be well-ventilated in a shaded area. Make sure there is plenty of fresh drinking water available.
Take it easy on the exercise
  • Avoid overexertion during hot weather.
  • Exercise can quickly cause heat stress in hot weather

Humidity takes a toll
  • Humidity interferes with an animal's ability to remove excess body heat. Pets only perspire around their paws, which is not enough to cool their body in humid weather.
  • To remove excess heat, animals normally pant. Humid weather makes it harder for this "panting process" to work efficiently.
 Special Considerations
  • The shape of an animal's nose/sinuses can contribute to overheating. "Smushed face" dogs (like Pugs) are more prone to heatstroke because it is harder for them to circulate air.
  • Overweight dogs have extra layers of fat insulation which trap in heat.
  • Age - very young animals may not have fully developed temperature regulating systems. Senior pets are more susceptible to heat stress.
 What to do
  • If your pet shows the signs of heatstroke listed at the right - your pet needs to be seen by a veterinarian immediately.
  •  Meanwhile, lower the pet's body temperature by applying cool water towels to the hairless parts of the body.
